maptalli

(n) A ceremonial weapon of the Annumpi tribe which is given to youth on their twelfth year. The weapon is a rock which is large enough that it would take the entire village to lift it.

  1. This word is already in use in this household since grandfather's time. Three related forms of usage:

    n. The collective weight of National Geographic magazines and maps (perhaps not so far from the definition given above).

    n. The total number of feet of shelf-space occupied by atlases, maps, globe, and guidebooks. The collective weight of a selected group of said objects, carried while traveling in unfamiliar territory.

    Ex: The maptalli of the family was so large that the floor on the east side of their house began to sag.

    v. (Possibly archaic given GPS).The frantic search for the correct map while traveling in unfamiliar territory. Ex: The passenger maptallied with increasing anxiety as the driver sped into the unfamiliar city.
